Is your bulk milk tank working correctly?

Regular checks and thorough wash routines of your bulk milk tank are a key step in the delivery of good milk quality on your farm.

One of the biggest causes of TBC and Thermoduric issues is that bulk milk tanks are not washed sufficiently and / or lack of a good descaling routine. You should also consider that significance of you milking machine hygiene.

Follow these simple steps to maintain the quality standards of your bulk milk tank:

  • Hot washing the milking machine is recommended every day
  • After every collection a bulk tank should be washed fully and checked regularly with a torch for build up within.
  • Descale the bulk milk tank at least once a week.
  • Check the bulk tank thermostat is working correctly every day.
  • The simple one - always check the bulk tank is turned on.
  • Make sure enough detergent is being used. Always follow the recommended levels as indicated on the product label.

If your bulk tank breaks down – please remember it is crucial to notify your Milk Quality Manager to risk assess the milk. We will work where possible to organise an early milk collection if that’s appropriate or on a rare occasion may have to advise you to dispose of your milk if it is unsuitable for collection.
