Tirlán’s Farming for Water: River Slaney Project shortlisted for prestigious European Innovation Award

Tirlán has been named as a finalists in the 2025 European Award for Cooperative Innovation, recognising sustainability-driven innovation across the agri-food sector.

About the Farming for Water: River Slaney Project

Launched in early 2024, the Farming for Water: River Slaney initiative is a proactive, science-led response to water quality challenges in Ireland’s south eastern region. The River Slaney, identified by the EPA as a Catchment of Concern, is also home to several hundred Tirlán farm family suppliers whom have genuine concerns regarding the future of Ireland’s Nitrates Derogation.

Collaborative Action for Real Impact

The project brings together expertise from Tirlán, Teagasc, the Local Authorities Water Programme , and accounting and advisory specialists ifac to help enhance water quality in this river that flows through the heart of the Tirlán catchment area.

It is underpinned by Tirlán’s Living Proof sustainability strategy and supported by the €60 million Farming for Water EIP and Tirlán’s own €16 million Sustainability Action Payment programme.

At its core is the Farm Support Service, a dedicated team providing one-to-one advisory support to help farmers implement targeted actions such as nutrient management, rainwater planning, and biodiversity enhancement.

Results

Early results are promising, with positive signs within the catchment area. There has been a 12% reduction in nitrogen loading leaving the River Slaney according to recent EPA reports.. Reductions in nitrogen loadings leaving the Nore, Barrow and other catchments were also reported.

These improvements reflect the significant efforts of our farm family suppliers and the co-op, including over €5 million in Farming for Water EIP applications now submitted by the Tirlán Agri-Sustainability team on behalf of suppliers.

This recognition demonstrates what is possible when farmers, cooperatives, and agencies work together to protect rivers, support rural communities, and secure the future of Irish agriculture.
