New Rules for Obtaining Parasite Dosing Products From December 1st

From December 1st, important changes will come into effect regarding the supply of veterinary medicines for food-producing animals.

These changes follow the implementation of updated EU Veterinary Medicinal Products legislation and the activation of the National Veterinary Prescription System (NVPS) by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) earlier this year.

Over recent months, veterinary practices, pharmacies, and licensed merchants, including Tirlán FarmLife and Tirlán CountryLife branches, have worked to integrate this national prescribing platform into existing retail channels.

From December 1st, veterinarians must use the NVPS when prescribing medicines for food-producing animals. Dispensing of these medicines by any licensed retailer will only be possible once a valid digital prescription exists on the NVPS.

Veterinary Prescription Now Required for All Antiparasitic Products

All antiparasitic medicines will require a veterinary prescription, including:

  • Wormers for stomach, gut, and lungworms
  • Fluke treatments
  • Fly and lice treatments
  • Coccidiosis treatments

Unlike prescriptions for antibiotics (e.g., mastitis tubes), which are valid for a maximum of 5 days and must be issued by the farm’s existing vet, prescriptions for antiparasitic medicines may remain valid for up to 6 months. These can be obtained from vets using information provided under the Proper Assessment Protocol.

How Tirlán is Supporting Farmers Through the Change

As a trusted provider of animal health solutions, Tirlán has fully integrated the NVPS into our retail network, ensuring seamless access to digital prescriptions and convenient availability of prescribed products.

Tirlán has also introduced a prescribing service for antiparasitic medicines in collaboration with accredited veterinarians operating under the Proper Assessment Protocol. This service, available through our Tirlán FarmLife and Tirlán CountryLife branches, helps farmers maintain effective parasite control and ensures timely access to the products they need.
