Certificate in Co-op Governance and Professional Development Commences
Agribusiness Co-op Corporate Dairy Tillage
Tirlán is pleased to announce the successful commencement of the Certificate in Co-op Governance and Professional Development as part of the Tirlán Governance Academy. This certificate, which launched with 21 participants from various levels of our representative structure, is a key initiative in our mission to enhance leadership capabilities within our Co-op membership.
A comprehensive framework for developing the essential governance knowledge and professional skills required for future leaders within Tirlán. Participants will benefit from a blend of academic learning and practical application, designed specifically for the co-op and agri-food sectors.
The programme is structured to provide a deep dive into the principles of co-op governance and professional development. Over the course of two semesters, participants will engage in a combination of in-person workshops, online sessions, and autonomous learning.
The curriculum is split into two key modules, each worth 10 credits:
1. Introduction to Co-ops and Corporate Governance
- This module explores the principles and characteristics of co-ops, highlighting their ethical approach to business. Participants will examine the different types of co-ops, the scale and scope of the sector, and the distinctiveness of co-op governance. The role of co-ops in sustainable agriculture and food will also be discussed, offering a comprehensive understanding of how governance in co-ops supports ethical and sustainable practices.
2. Sustainable Success: Professional Skills for Thriving in the Agri-Food Sector
- Focusing on professional development, this module equips participants with the skills needed to succeed in the competitive agri-food sector. Topics include problem-solving, self-awareness, effective communication, team dynamics, stress management, and productivity. These skills are essential for personal and professional growth, enabling participants to lead more effectively within Tirlán and the wider sector.
The course is designed to be flexible and to fit around the busy schedules of our members. Delivered over four 2-3 day blocks, the workshops are carefully scheduled to avoid peak farming periods. Each block is supplemented by online learning to ensure participants can continue their studies between in-person sessions.
The delivery model emphasises practical, real-world application, with each participant receiving ongoing mentoring throughout the programme. This support ensures that the knowledge and skills gained are directly relevant to their roles within Tirlán’s governance structure.
This tailored programme is a critical component of Tirlán’s long-term strategy to ensure that its members are equipped with the governance expertise needed to uphold the co-op's values and drive sustainable growth. By fostering a deeper understanding of co-op governance, we are preparing our members for leadership roles that will shape the future of Tirlán and the agri-food sector at large.
This Certificate is the second level in a 5 tiered Governance Academy which will facilitate a gradual entry / re-entry to study and encompass development up to and including Board level. Tier 1 - ‘Seeding Success’ was successfully run in the second quarter of this year and offered participants an opportunity to get to know their co-op through a blend of in-person workshops, online webinars and expert-led discussions.
With the launch of the Certificate, Tirlán is reinforcing its commitment to continuous learning and development, ensuring that the leadership within the co-op remains strong, knowledgeable, and forward-thinking.
