APPLY NOW: Certificate in Co-op Governance and Professional Development

Tirlán is pleased to announce that applications are now open for Tier 2 of the Governance Academy which is the Certificate in Co operative Governance and Professional Development, delivered in partnership with University College Cork and ICOS (UCC). Following the success of previous cohorts, this accredited programme continues to play a key role in building a strong, informed and future-focused representative structure within the Co op. Designed specifically for Tirlán members, the programme equips participants with the knowledge, confidence and skills to actively contribute to their Co-op’s representative structure.

The course is delivered through a blend of in-person workshops, online sessions and assignments, allowing participants to balance study alongside farming and other commitments. Participants will explore core areas such as co-operative governance, leadership, communication, personal effectiveness and member engagement, while gaining direct insight from Tirlán teams, industry experts and peers.

Who can apply
Applications are open to all Tirlán shareholders.

A farmer’s perspective

For Alison Holmes, a young dairy farmer from Co. Laois and one of Tirlán’s youngest Council Members, the programme has been a valuable step in her governance journey. Having first become involved through the Designated Seat initiative, Alison progressed to Council and now plays an active role representing members in her region.

Reflecting on her experience, she noted that the programme reinforced the importance of informed participation and long-term thinking: “It highlighted how Member leadership and business strategy are closely linked both on-farm and across the wider organisation.”

Her experience highlights the impact of investing in members and supporting diverse voices within the Co-op, ensuring that the next generation of farming families is actively shaping its future.

Members who meet the criteria and are interested in deepening their understanding of the Co-op and contributing more actively to its future are encouraged to apply. Spaces are limited to ensure a high-quality and engaging learning experience.
